The novel charts the history of a rich man whose life is falling apart. Mehring’s family departs, his farm begins to fail. The perilous decline in his fortunes serves as a metaphor for of the state as a whole, and unless drastic action is taken a tragedy is sure to occur.
Winner (joint) of the 1974 Booker Prize. Nadine Gordimer was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991.
